SESSION PREPARATION
Separate tracks. More meaningful control.
A stereo mix combines the instruments into two channels. An individual track keeps one source accessible. Stems usually combine a group, such as all drums or all backing vocals.
Why that loud guitar needs its own track
If the guitar is isolated, its level can be changed without turning down everything else. In a finished stereo mix, the guitar shares frequencies with other instruments. The current prototype has no source separation and cannot reliably treat the guitar as a separate fader.
Prepare an aligned export
For a band listening test, export every track from the same timeline start, at the same sample rate, without normalizing each file separately. Include silence before an instrument enters so its timing stays intact. WAV is a useful working format.
Keep names and roles clear
Use names such as Kick, Bass DI, Lead vocal, and Lead guitar. Note whether a file is an individual source, a group, or an effects return. Include a separate rough mix to help the listener understand the intended balance.
What the Session Desk controls
The prototype’s linked Desk adjusts plug-in output trims. Those are not the DAW’s track faders. Processing or fader changes after the plug-in can still alter the final balance, so the complete mix must be auditioned.
